Symbolism in the novel : Of Mice And Men
The american dream is sort of a hidden meaning in the novel.
The Farm they dream of is that wish for freedom, independence and wealth, which is also what the American Dream is.
Candy's dog symbolizes weakness, yet he is worth being loved and deserves a life as much as every other creature, as much as he suffers though, it is better to set him free and put him down.

Questions on chapter 5&6
What things show that Lennie is mentally retarted? -They way he speaks
-His facial expression
-Him being so dependent on George
Is George's treatment of Lennie fair? I don't think it's fair but Lennie seems happy and i don't think he realizes anyway. George is being generous with him and i think he's trying his best, Lennie does cause a lot of trouble and I find it very loyal of George to stick with him.
Is George's treatment of Lennie understandable? I personnaly don't like kids at all, i have an aversion to them and Lennie's behaviour mirrors that of a six year old child, which is why i can understand George's treatment of Lennie's.
Could Goerge have helped him more? I think he is already trying his best and Lennie seems happy.
How does Candy treat Lennie? He treats him respectfully and just liek every other guy on the farm.
How does Curley's wife treat him? She plays around with him, knowing his disabilities and she enjoys the attention given to her by Lennie.
How does Crooks treat him? I think Crooks is unsure of what to think of Lennie but he is positively surprised that Lennie isn't racist against him like the other guys on teh ranch.
Why do they all talk to him? I guess out of respect and maybe the feel a little sorry for him.
Why does Lennie kil the puppy and later the girl? He didnt mean to kill the puppy but he is completely unaware of his strength and power which is why he broke the puppy's neck. His murder of Curley's wife was also an accident, he only tried to stop her from screaming.
Do you think Lennie had to be shot? What would have happened to Lennie if George hadn't shot him? I would have shot Lennie a long time ago. Lennie would have probably been shot by Curley anyway if they caught him or he would have been tied up in a cage.
How is the killing of Lennie similar to the killing of Candy's dog? Why do you think George killed Lennie himself instead of letting the men do it? The killings are similar because both are decisions that weren't easy and two men had to let go of a person and a dog that they have spent a long time with. The victims are also in similar situations, quite useless and bother people too much.

Chapter Summary questions form chapter 3 & 4
Why doesn't Candy want to kill his dog? He doesn't want to kill his dog because he has had him ever since the dog was a puppy and it is an old companion.
Are Candy's feelings understandable? Have you ever felt very attached to an old or sick animal that had to be put to sleep? Explain your feelings. Sometimes these pets are the only one's that wont judge you or the only one's that'll listen. I have lost qiute a few pets for different reasons and it feels as if a family-member has been taken away.
Why does Candy say later on that he should hav shot his dog himself and not let a stranger do it? Because his dog's last moments should have been with his oldest friend and make his death one that counts and one that will be remembered. Instead of having Carlson do it, Candy should have done it because last moment are to be made honorable.
Why did Curley pick on Lennie? Because 'Curley is like a lot of small guys; he hates big guys' (Quote from novel) I also think that he feels intimidated by Lennie.
Describe Curley's main problem in your opinion. I guess since Curley's so small, he is jealous of Lennie's size and feels like Lennie could be danger to him for some reason.
Why didn't Lennie fight back at first when Curley hit him? Because George told him to keep out of trouble or else he wouldn't be able to tend the rabbits. I also think maybe because George would hit him and Lennie wouldn't ever touch George.
What happened to Curley as a result of picking on Lennie? Lennie beat him up and crushed his hand.
How does crooks react to Lennie's appearance at the door of his room? He was negatively surprised and I don't think he knew about Lennie's disability. Crooks isn't welcome in their bunk house so he doesn't welcome Lennie into his room. Understandable.
Crooks says people at the ranch dont like him because... He's black and they say he stinks.
Crooks invites Lennie to stay and talk with him because... He finds Lennie interesting hasn't talked to people for a long time.

Of Mice and Men
'Of Mice and men' is a story of two men looking for work in the great depression years. Lennie, a tall man and his companion George travel through the country until they finally find a ranch where they can eat, sleep and earn money.
The dream they share is of a farm in which they have animals and they live "off the fatta lan".
As the dream becomes more and more realistic, George's and Lennie's bond breaks and causes George to make a decision that didn't come easy.
The Boss' son, Curley, married a women who is referred to as nothing but Curley's wife in the book. Though she is lonely and just wants to talk to some people since Curley is a rather banal husband, she ends up flirting and no one on the ranch needs any trouble with Curley which is why every one avoids her. Yet Lennie can't resist her ostentatious attitude.
Slim, a well respected skinner, is surprised by the fact that a guy like George would travel with a guy like Lennie since Lennie makes George's life ten times harder than it already is. Slim seems like a nice person; his perspective is one to be heard and it seems as if the other guys look up to him.
George, Lennie's companion, is an altruistic man. Throughout the story he realizes that life would be a lot easier without Lennie since Lennie is the one that keeps the going from ranch to ranch because he is causing so much trouble.
George becomes close with the other ranch guys and I think its them who make him do what he did in the end....
